After working primarily as a reliever in rookie ball, Varner transitioned to a starter in 2015 with each of the Low- and High-A levels. Originally a 10th round pick in 2014 out of Miami (OH) by the Reds, Varner really came into his own early in the 2016 campaign. He posted an ERA under two through May of that season in High-A. Varner, a lefty, throws strikes and gets ahead of hitters. While his strikeout numbers were down slightly at the beginning in 2016, his WHIP and hits allowed numbers were as well. Those strikeout numbers picked up as the season went along. Varner works with a low-90s fastball with strong movement and a plus curve and change.
