The Reds acquired Johnson from the Giants in a post-deadline waiver deal for Marlon Byrd in August of 2015. The 24-year-old Johnson was in Double-A at the time of the trade and got six outings with Pensacola after it. In those, he struck out 11 hitters in 8.2 innings, and walked a pair. He was promoted to Triple-A Louisville in 2016 and the strikeout success continued, as he was fanning nearly a hitter per inning through May. The walks were up, but not entirely alarming. More concerning was that his stuff was playing much more hittable. Johnson is a taller right-hander and has a fastball that gets in the low- to mid-90s, but has hit 100 in the past with the Giants organization. He also has a power slider that compliments the pitch well. He mixes in a deceptive delivery and has much more success against righties than lefties.
