Melville was originally a fourth round pick in the 2008 draft by the Kansas City Royals out of high school. However, he had Tommy John surgery in 2012 and signed with the Tigers. Prior to the surgery, he had risen to the Double-A level. Melville was acquired by the Reds as a free agent prior to the 2016 season and made his Major League debut. Following the surgery, Melville took time to regain the command, but made 26 and 27 starts in 2014 and ’15 in Double-A and Triple-A. Melville throws both a two-seam and four-seam fastball in the low-90s. He also features a curveball that is above average, and occasionally he mixes in a slider and a change.
