Game preview: Top prospects take to the hill

Wednesday night has a nice mix of starters for the Reds organization, headlined by former first and second round picks Nick Travieso and Tanner Rainey. Prospect Keury Mella is also expected to get the nod.

Reds – off for All-Star break

Louisville – Triple-A All-Star Game

Biloxi at Pensacola, 7:30 p.m. EST

Starting pitcher: Nick Travieso (4-4, 4.35 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 59 K, 38 BB)

Notes: While the season did not get off to a strong start for former first round pick Nick Travieso, he has been much better in his last four starts. In three of the four, Travieso has gone six innings, with the other being just four. However, in all four, he has allowed just 14 hits and four runs in 22 innings of work. Prior to this stretch, Travieso had only worked at least six innings once this season. While he has still walked seven hitters in the last four games, the command has gotten better as well.

Daytona at St. Lucie, 6:30 p.m. EST

Starting pitcher: TBA

Notes: While the Daytona site has not listed a starter yet for the game, it would be up to Keury Mella in the rotation. After tossing six shutout innings last time out, Mella rebounded from a slow start to June. Three of his first four outings in the month, Mella was unable to make it out of the fifth inning. He had only one such outing in the first two months of the season. However, July got off stronger for Mella, who has allowed eight hits and two runs in 11 innings for the month. The bad news is that he has walked eight to match his eight strikeouts.

Beloit at Dayton, 7:00 p.m. EST

Starting pitcher: Tanner Rainey (2-7, 6.22 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, 74 K, 43 BB)

Notes: Tanner Rainey has now matched his 15 professional starts from a season ago that he made after being drafted in the second round, and one thing has done him in much of the season: command. Rainey has posted nearly six BB/9 in 2016 and has paid for it in all of the other statistical departments as well. Since the beginning of June, Rainey has allowed 21 free passes in 29 innings of work. To no surprise, in two of his last three starts he has allowed six earned runs.

Grand Junction at Billings, 9:05 p.m. EST

Starting pitcher: TBD

Notes: The Billings site has the starter listed as Ian Kahaloa, which is highly unlikely because he worked the second game of the double header on Monday. If the rotation holds as last time, the starter would be Moises Nova, who is in his first season stateside after being signed out of the Dominican.
