Game Notes: Though the 2016 season has not gone as planned at Double-A for former 23rd round pick turned prospect Sal Romano, Tuesday was by far his best outing of the season.
Romano made quick work of Biloxi the first time through the order, retiring the first nine in order. During the span, he struck out five. The nine strikeouts for the game matched Romano’s season and Double-A career highs.
Romano was working with a fastball that touched the mid-90s, but was still at 93 in the seventh.
Pensacola spotted Romano five runs in the first inning and he never looked back.
Sebastian Elizalde started the scoring with a two-run triple the opposite way. This snapped an 0-for-9 skid for Elizalde.
Taylor Sparks has also struggled in his early Double-A time, but he added a RBI single in the frame through the infield. Sparks had been hitless in his previous four contests.
Joe Hudson capped the scoring in the frame with a two-run single.
Phillip Ervin picked up two hits and drove in three runs with a double in the seventh. Ervin had just six hits in his previous nine games coming in, with three of those in one contest.
