Overview: The theme for starters on Monday is a lack of command. Some, like Nick Travieso, Amir Garrett, and Brandon Finnegan are trying to relocate the command. Others, like Tanner Rainey and Moises Nova are trying to find it to begin with in professional ball.
Atlanta at Cincinnati, 7:10 p.m. EST
Starting pitcher: Brandon Finnegan (4-7, 4.71 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 73 K, 53 BB)
Notes: The Reds have announced that they are looking for ways to save innings for Finnegan in the second half of the season, pushing him back to the fourth game after the break. What the Reds really need to find in command for the lefty, who has allowed 53 walks in the first half. He has also struggled with command in getting too much of the plate and pitching to hard contact.
Louisville at Columbus, 7:05 p.m. EST
Starting pitcher: Amir Garrett (1-1, 2.89 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 12 K, 10 BB)
Notes: Garrett has been the biggest bright spot in an organization with several pitching prospects. Since earning a promotion to Triple-A, Garrett has not lost a step at all with the adjustment. The biggest issue so far for Garrett has been command, as he has walked 10 batters in just 18.2 innings of work. However, his number show that he has been effectively wild.
Pensacola at Jacksonville, 7:05 p.m. EST
Starting pitcher: Nick Travieso (4-5, 4.07 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 65 K, 38 BB)
Notes: Coming off one of his stronger starts of the year, Travieso looks to build on it Monday night. The previous start was Travieso’s longest of the season at 7.1 innings with no walks and six strikeouts, while allowing just one run. The BB/9 totals are up to over four for Travieso, so not walking anyone is a sign that he is headed back in the right direction toward his career average.
Jupiter at Daytona, 7:05 p.m. EST
Starting pitcher: TBD
Wisconsin at Dayton, 7:00 p.m. EST
Starting pitcher: Tanner Rainey (2-7, 5.79 ERA, 1.66 WHIP, 79 K, 46 BB)
Notes: The 2016 season overall has been a disappointing one for the former second round pick Rainey. However, he is looking to build upon a solid start last time out, where he went five shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five. The downside was that he walked three hitters. He has walked 10 in his last three outings and has a whopping 5.7 BB/9 for the season.
Orem at Billings, 9:05 p.m. EST
Starting pitcher: Moises Nova (0-3, 4.58 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 19 K, 11 BB)
Notes: Nova will be making his sixth start of the season on Monday night. While his season ERA is over 4.50, Nova is just south of 10 in K/9. His main issue has been command, as Nova has walked 11 hitters in 17.2 innings of work. He has had only one start where he did not walk multiple hitters this season.
AZL Reds at AZL Angels, 9:00 p.m. EST
Starting pitcher: TBD
