Game recap (7/17/16): Stephenson wild again

Result: Louisville 6, Indianapolis 4

Starting Pitcher: Robert Stephenson, RHP – 6 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 4 K

Top Hitter: Jesse Winker, RF – 1-for-3, 2B, R, RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Hernan Iribarren, CF – 2-for-5, 3B, 2 R, RBI

Jermaine Curtis, 2B – 1-for-3, 2B, R, RBI

Game Notes: Command has been the struggle for Robert Stephenson for the 2016 season. Despite coming up and helping the Reds for two starts earlier in the season, control and walks have been the biggest pain points for the right-hander.

For three innings on Sunday, this was not the problem. Stephenson was perfect through three innings, but then walked five hitters in his last three innings of work.

Jesse Winker continued a modest three-game hit streak on Sunday, and has hit in all but one game since being activated from the DL with a wrist injury.

Game one:

Result: Jacksonville 1, Pensacola 0

Starting Pitcher: Jackson Stephens, RHP – 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

Top Hitter: Zack Vincej, SS – 1-for-3, SB

Other Notable Performers:

Phillip Ervin, CF – 0-for-1, 2 SB

Game Notes: Jackson Stephens ran into a rare issue on Sunday with his command, walking four hitters in five innings of work. In fact, Stephens battled through throwing 36 pitches in the first inning. He allowed just one run on a bases loaded hit by pitch, after a double and two walks.

After the first, Stephens rebounded nicely and gave himself a positive outing.

In the first game of the double header, Pensacola’s offense was no-existent. They picked up just one hit and a handful of base runners on walks.

Game two:

Result: Pensacola 7, Jacksonville 6

Starting Pitcher: Sal Romano, RHP – 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 K

Top Hitter: Taylor Sparks, 3B – 2-for-2, HR, R, RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Brandon Dixon, 2B – 2-for-5, 2 R, RBI

Juan Duran, RF – 2-for-4

Game Notes: Similar to Stephens in the first game, Sal Romano was greeted rudely in the first inning. In the frame, he allowed an RBI double and a two-run homer to get in an early hole.

However, also like Stephens, Romano rebounded nicely and retired seven of the next nine batters.

Unlike Stephens, Romano was given some run support. Brandon Dixon and Zack Vincej picked up RBI singles in the first.

Taylor Sparks added another home run. It was his third in four games.

Result: Jupiter 3, Daytona 0

Starting Pitcher: Wendolyn Bautista, RHP – 5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

Top Hitter: Angelo Gumbs, LF – 1-for-3

Other Notable Performers:

Garrett Boulware, C – 1-for-3

Blake Trahan, SS – 1-for-4

Game Notes: Angelo Gumbs extended his now 10-game hit streak for Daytona, but it did not get much more offense than that. As a team, Daytona only picked up three hits the entire game on Sunday.

Wendolyn Bautista allowed three runs in 5.2 innings of work and the offense was not able to give him any support.

Result: Wisconsin 16, Dayton 5

Starting Pitcher: Jose Lopez, RHP – 2.1 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 1 BB, 2 K

Top Hitter: Chris Okey, C – 2-for-4, HR, R, 4 RBI, SB

Other Notable Performers:

Shane Mardirosian, LF – 2-for-5, 3B

Mitch Piatnik, CF – 2-for-4, RBI, R

Game Notes: Chris Okey had one is his better games since being promoted to Dayton with two hits and a home run. He also stole a base in the game.

Okey does have three multi-hit games over his last seven, but is just 9-for-33 over his last 10 after Sunday.

Jose Lopez had, by far his worst outing of the season on Sunday. It was his season low in innings and strikeouts, and a season high in runs. The eight hits allowed tied the second worst total for the 2016 season.

The ultra consistent Lopez was due for a sideways outing, and it happened to be on Sunday.

Result: Billings 7, Orem 6

Starting Pitcher: Ian Kahaloa, RHP – 4 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 K

Top Hitter: John Sansone, 2B – 2-for-4, R, 2B, RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Hector Vargas, SS – 1-for-4

Taylor Trammell, DH – 2-for-3, R

Game notes: Ian Kahaloa allowed his first runs in three starts with Billings the season, and was not as sharp as he was in his first two outings.

However, he still struck out six hitters in four innings and did not allow a walk.

Hector Vargas continued his current 14-game hit streak, while Taylor Trammell added two more knocks for Billings. Trammell now has 11 hits in his last 28 at bats, with four of his last seven games having multiple hits.

Result: AZL Reds 7, AZL Angels 6

Starting Pitcher: Jonathon Crawford, RHP – 2.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Top Hitter: Pabel Manzanero, C – 2-for-3, R

Other Notable Performers:

Michael Beltre, CF – 1-for-4, 3B, R

Bruce Yari, 1B – 1-for-3, R, RBI

Game notes: Johnathon Crawford had his second rehab start with the AZL Reds on Sunday. While it was not his strongest outing, he still got work in and walked just one hitter.

After allowing a single and a fielder’s choice reach, Crawford saw a two-run triple and a 2-0 deficit after the first three hitters. However, he rebounded to get the next three on an RBI ground out, another ground out, and his only strikeout.

The second was a 1-2-3 inning for Crawford with three ground outs.

Crawford went back out for the third before reaching his pitch count.
