Game recap (7/24/16): Garrett perfect through final 5.1 innings

Result: Lehigh Valley 5, Louisville 1

Starting Pitcher: Amir Garrett, LHP – 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K

Top Hitter: Scott Schebler, CF – 2-for-4, HR, 2B, R, RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Jesse Winker, LF – 1-for-4

Game Notes: Amir Garrett made just one big mistake on Sunday night and it cost him a loss.

Garrett started the game by allowing a walk and a single, before picking up a double play. Just when it looked like he was going to get out of the jam, he allowed a home run to right field. Though he served up a double to the next hitter, he got out of it with just two runs allowed.

Following the rough first, Garrett settled in and showed his best stuff. He was perfect for the last 5.1 innings of the night, but the first part was enough to earn the loss.

Scott Schebler picked up his 17th double and 12th home run of the season in the contest, adding two of Louisville’s three hits in the contest.

Jesse Winker picked up the other hit, a single, to extend his 10-game hit streak. Winker is hitting .395 over the streak.

Result: Biloxi 1, Pensacola 0

Starting Pitcher: Barrett Astin, RHP – 5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

Top Hitter: Chad Wallach – 1-for-3, 2B

Other Notable Performers:

Sebastian Elizalde, RF – 1-for-3

Game Notes: In making his first start in a month, Barrett Astin pitched strong.

The only mistake the he made was to the opposing pitcher, Brandon Woodruff, who smoked a two-out, solo home run to right. Otherwise, Astin was perfect through his remaining 4.2 innings of work.

The issue was that Woodruff was just better. The Pensacola offense was only able to add two hits on the offensive side and Chad Wallach was the only player to reach second base.

Jimmy Moran worked his third straight scoreless inning, and eighth in his last 10. Over the 10 outing, he has 15 strikeouts and three walks in 14.2 innings.

Game one:

Result: Bradenton 9, Daytona 7

Starting Pitcher: Wendolyn Bautista, RHP – 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K

Top Hitter: Aristides Aquino, RF – 3-for-4, HR, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Juan Duran, LF – 2-for-3, 2B, R, 2 RBI, BB

Garrett Boulware, C – 2-for-3, 2B, R, RBI

Game Notes: The first game of the night, was the completion of the game Friday night that was suspended due to weather.

In the game, Keury Mella took over for Wendolyn Bautista after the game was called in the first inning.

Mella allowed seven hits and five runs over 4.2 innings of work. However, he was still in line for the win due to a powerful offensive effort from Daytona.

Three players had at least two hits, but Aristides Aquino led the way with three. Aquino has currently hit in five straight games. He has doubled in three straight and has three doubles, two triples and a home run over the span. The stretch was following a span of five games he went hitless.

Game two:

Result: Daytona 10, Bradenton 3

Starting Pitcher: Wendolyn Bautista, RHP – 0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 0 K

Top Hitter: Juan Duran, LF – 3-for-4, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Angelo Gumbs, DH – 3-for-4, 2B, 2 R, RBI

Gavin LaValley, 1B – 1-for-4, HR, R, 3 RBI

Game Notes: In the second game, Wendolyn Bautista was also named as the starter and worked three more innings. Over those, he walked four hitters and allowed two runs.

Once again, none of that mattered, as Daytona had another strong offensive output.

Aquino picked up two more hits and a double. Angelo Gumbs and Juan Duran each added three hits, including an extra base hit each.

Gavin LaValley picked up a home run. However, LaValley is still just four for his last 33 at bats.

Result: Cedar Rapids 10, Dayton 6

Starting Pitcher: Tanner Rainey, RHP – 5 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K

Other Notable Performers:

Kevin Franklin, DH – 2-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI

Nick Senzel, 3B – 0-for-2, 2 BB, R

Game Notes:  After being spotted two runs in the top of the first, Tanner Rainey allowed four of his seven runs in the bottom of the frame. The good news is that only two were earned, but he still walked three hitters in five innings of work.

Shed Long and Kevin Franklin each added two hits and a double. Nick Senzel reached base twice on a pair of walks.

Result: Billings 12, Grand Junction 2

Starting Pitcher: Moises Nova, RHP – 4 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

Top Hitter: Alejo Lopez, 3B – 3-for-5, 2B, 3B, 3 R, 2 RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Jose Siri, CF – 3-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI

Daniel Sweet, LF – 2-for-6, 2 3B, 3 R, RBI

Game Notes:  Billings enjoyed a monster offensive output on Sunday with 12 runs and 15 hits.

The five run second really set the tone and the Mustangs cruised to the easy victory.

Alex Webb tossed four innings of scoreless relief as well in his fifth appearance. Webb has now allowed just nine hits and run over 11.1 innings, while striking out nine.

Hector Vargas added two hits and a triple. He has now hit in five straight games and 23 of his last 26 games.
