Game recap (7/28/16): Aristides Aquino five hits, Ismael Guillon fans 10

Result: Louisville

The Louisville Bats were off on Thursday night and return to action on Friday.

Result: Montgomery 4, Pensacola 1

Starting Pitcher: Jackson Stephens, RHP – 6.1 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

Top Hitter: Phillip Ervin, LF – 1-for-4, 2B

Other Notable Performers:

Zach Vincej, SS – 1-for-4, 2B

Ray Chang, 1B – 2-for-3, R, BB

Game Notes: Though Jackson Stephens final line included three runs, he ran into some tough luck late.

The game got off to a rocky start for Stephens as well, as he allowed three singles and a run in the first inning. He also allowed a double to lead off the second inning as well.

However, he retired fifteen of his next 17 hitters through the sixth inning. Four of those were via the strikeout. All he allowed were a single and walk in the third.

The trouble came in the seventh inning, where he was likely left in the game too long. The question is that none of the contact was all that hard, it just found holes. After a strikeout and two softer singles, Montgomery scored again on a squeeze play. It scored again on a hit and run that left a hole between short and third wide open for one of the softest singles possible.

Stephens was removed after the runs and Jacob Ehret got out of the inning with no more damage.

Phillip Ervin played in his single for the second straight game. Wednesday was the first game he played since Sunday and picked up a pair of RBI.

Result: Daytona 13, Clearwater 5

Starting Pitcher: Ismael Guillon, RHP – 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 10 K

Top Hitter: Aristides Aquino, RF – 5-for-5, 2B, 3B, 2 R, RBI, BB

Other Notable Performers:

Angelo Gumbs, DH – 2-for-4, 3B, HR, 4 R, RBI, BB

Gavin LaValley, 3B – 1-for-4, 2B, 2 R, RBI, BB

Game Notes: There isn’t much more that you can ask for out of a team that what Daytona achieved on Thursday night.

Arisides Aquino not only stretched his hitting streak to eight games, he picked up five hits and finished just a home run short of the cycle. Over that eight game stretch, Aquino is hitting .516, with nine extra base hits.

In his second start since July 9, Ismael Guillon struck out a season high 10 batters in five scoreless innings. Guillon allowed a double in the first, but picked up strikeouts for six of his first seven outs. The only other touchy situation was a single and a walk allowed in the third, but Guillon was able to pitch around it.

Angelo Gumbs hit a long home run to center field in the third inning. Gumbs now has three home runs in his last nine games and has hits in five of his last six contests.

Gavin LaValley added a hit on Thursday for the third straight game to break out of a slump. However, he is still hitting just .162 in his last 10 games.

Result: Great Lakes 7, Dayton 5

Starting Pitcher: Austin Orewiler, RHP – 5 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

Top Hitter: Chris Okey, C – 1-for-4, HR, R, RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Nick Senzel, 3B – 1-for-4, BB

James Vasquez, 1B – 2-for-4, HR, R, RBI

Game Notes: In an episode of deja vu from the night before, Chris Okey hit his sixth home run of the season since being promoted to Dayton in the fourth on a line shot to left center field. That is Okey’s fourth home run in the last eight games, and continues an eight game hit streak.

James Vasquez also hammered a long home run to right field in the sixth, and a double in the fourth following the Okey home run. Vasquez is now 6-for-11 in his last three games.

However, the run support was not enough to hold up for Austin Orewiler, who had a rough night with base runners. After allowing seven hits and two runs in his prior two starts over 10 innings, Orewiler allowed nine hits and two walks on Thursday night.

Nick Senzel added another single and is 12-for-28 with five extra base hits and 13 RBI in his last nine games.
