Game recap (8/2/16): Nick Senzel gets on base four times, Jackson Stephens tosses a gem

Game one:

Result: Toledo 5, Louisville 1

Starting Pitcher: John Lamb, LHP – 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 K

Top Hitter: Carlos Triunfel, SS – 2-for-4, HR, 2B, R, RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Jesse Winker, LF – 1-for-3, BB

Hernan Iribarren, CF – 2-for-4; 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R

Game Notes: Despite tossing just 73 pitches, and allowing no earned runs, John Lamb exited the first game after just four innings.

He did not appear to be injured when leaving the mound, but did really labor in the fourth inning on a hot day.

After tossing a perfect first inning, Lamb allowed an unearned run on a single and then a fielding error by the right fielder with two outs.

He allowed another single in the third, but ended the inning with a pickoff. Lamb allowed two hits and two walks in the fourth, but was aided by a caught stealing and left the bases loaded.

Jesse Winker added a single and had picked up hits in four of his last five games. However, he did not get a hit in the second game of the doubleheader.

Game two:

Result: Louisville 3, Toledo 0

Starting Pitcher: Wandy Peralta, LHP – 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

Top Hitter: Ray Chang, 1B – 3-for-4, 2 2B, RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Kyle Waldrop, RF – 2-for-4, 2 2B, 2 R

Juan Perez, 2B – 2-for-3, RBI, BB, SB

Game Notes: Ray Chang certainly wants to stick with Louisville in his second stint after returning from Pensacola this week.

Chang has five hits in his first three games back in Triple-A, including two doubles in the second game.

Kyle Waldrop also added a pair of doubles. The two hits in the contest breaks a 1-for-20 slump for Waldrop since returning from Cincinnati on July 29.

Wandy Peralta allowed just five base runners in his four innings of work in just his second start of the season. Peralta had allowed just three earned runs in his last 22.1 innings coming into the start.

Result: Pensacola 5, Mississippi 1

Starting Pitcher: Jackson Stephens, RHP – 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K

Top Hitter: Alex Blandino, 3B – 3-for-5, 2 RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Chad Wallach, 1B – 2-for-2, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB

Brandon Dixon, RF – 1-for-4, HR, R, RBI

Game Notes: Jackson Stephens has been purely consistent for Pensacola in 2016, and that trend continued into Tuesday night.

Through three innings, Stephens was rolling in the start, allowing a hit in each of the first two innings, but striking out four in that span. He fanned two in the third, his first perfect inning.

However, he also went perfect in the fourth, fifth, and sixth with three more strikeouts. Over his starts, Stephens appears to just get stronger as he gets looser in the middle innings.

In the seventh, he allowed a lead off triple and a RBI ground out, but that was all that Mississippi could muster against him.

Alex Blandino extended his current seven-game hit streak with three hits Tuesday night. He has now hitting an even .400 over his last 10 games. He has also homered twice in his last five games.

Chad Wallach homered on Tuesday night and now has two in his last nine games, with three prior to that.

Result: Daytona

Daytona was off on Tuesday night and return to action on Wednesday.

Result: Bowling Green 9, Dayton 3

Starting Pitcher: Austin Orewiler, RHP – 4.2 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

Top Hitter: Brantley Bell, 2B – 3-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, SB

Other Notable Performers:

Nick Senzel, 3B – 2-for-3, 2B, 2 BB

Zack Shields, CF – 2-for-4, 2B, 2 R

Game Notes: All Nick Senzel has done since being promoted to Low-A Dayton is get on base.

After two hits and two more walks on Tuesday night, Senzel has a .451 OBP in his first 28 games. His strikeout to walk ratio is 21:22.

This is all after Senzel had even endured a mini slump coming into Tuesday night’s game. Senzel had gone just 3-for-15 in his last five games prior.

It is possible that Austin Orewiler has hit the wall for this season. He struggled again Tuesday night and has allowed at least eight hits and four runs in four of his last six starts.

Brantley Bell added three hits and is 6-for-14 in his last four games.

Result: Billings

The Mustangs are off for the Pioneer League All-Star break and return to action on Thursday.

Result: AZL Reds

The AZL Reds were off on Tuesday night and will be back in action on Wednesday.
