Game preview (8/4/16): Amir Garrett looks to build on strong July

Overview: Brandon Finnegan and Amir Garrett look to re-locate command, while Scott Moss makes his fifth professional start.

St. Louis at Cincinnati, 12:35 p.m. EST

Starting pitcher: Brandon Finnegan (6-8, 4.68 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 86 K, 59 BB)

Notes: For Brandon Finnegan, consistency and command has been the name of the game. Finnegan really has struggled with command in 2016, allowing 59 walks. He has also struggled with command in getting too much of the plate and pitching to hard contact. Through his first 117.1 innings of work this season, Finnegan has allowed a league high 22 home runs. He allowed eight home runs in his first 15 innings in July. However, his last start was promising, as he worked six shutout innings, allowing just four hits. He did walk three batters though, showing the command questions are still there.

Toledo at Louisville, 7:05 p.m. EST

Starting pitcher: Amir Garrett (2-2, 3.31 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 25 K, 17 BB)

Notes: While Garrett did post a 3.97 ERA in four starts in July, the league hit just .198 against him. Garrett posted 16 strikeouts in 22.1 innings of work. The main issue for Garrett was the nine walks, but six of those came in one outing. He also allowed five runs in that start, inflating his monthly ERA. He will make his first start in August, looking to rebuild that command into a possible big league September start.

Mississippi at Pensacola, 7:30 p.m. EST

Starting pitcher: TBD

Notes: While it is listed as TBD on the Pensacola website, Barrett Astin started for Pensacola last time in this spot on the rotation.

Daytona at Bervard County, 6:35 p.m. EST

Starting pitcher: TBD

Notes: While the first game of the doubleheader is listed as TBD, the recently promoted Jose Lopez would be on full rest to make his High-A debut.

Dayton at West Michigan, 7:00 p.m. EST

Starting pitcher: Tanner Rainey (3-9, 5.73 ERA, 1.70 WHIP, 92 K, 60 BB)

Notes: The 2016 season overall has been a disappointing one for the former second round pick Rainey. After walking six hitters in 10.1 innings toward the beginning of July, which is still high but down for Rainey, it looked like he could be trending in the right direction. However, he walked 14 hitters again in his last three starts. He also allowed seven hits in his July 24 start.

Ogden at Billings, 9:05 p.m. EST

Starting pitcher: Scott Moss (0-0, 2.53 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 8 K, 2 BB)

Notes: The 2016 fourth round pick out of Florida Moss will make his fifth professional start on Thursday night. He has allowed three hits in each of his last three starts and one earned run in both of his last two. Moss worked a season high 4.2 innings on July 23, and will work to build some more solid professional innings before the season ends.

AZL Reds at AZL Brewers, 9:00 p.m. EST

Starting pitcher: TBD
