Game recap (8/5/16): Nick Senzel continues to mash, T.J. Friedl homers twice in first game

Result: Columbus 17, Louisville 4

Starting Pitcher: Daniel Wright, RHP – 5.1 IP, 13 H, 11 R, 11 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

Top Hitter: Jesse Winker, LF – 4-for-5, R, 2 RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Juan Perez, SS – 2-for-4, 2 R

Hernan Iribarren, RF  – 2-for-4

Game Notes: Not to be outdone on a night that features many of the hitting prospects in the organization having a big night, Jesse Winker joined the parade

Winker added four hits, and has hits in six of his last eight games. He also has three multi-hit games over that span.

However, on the opposite side, the Louisville pitching was poor again. Daniel Wright was a hit machine, allowing 13 in 5.1 innings of work. He has allowed eight hits in five of his last six starts.

Result: Biloxi 5, Pensacola 4

Starting Pitcher: Tyler Mahle, RHP – 7 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

Top Hitter: Taylor Sparks, 3B – 2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI, R

Other Notable Performers:

Phillip Ervin, LF  – 1-for-5, 2B, RBI

Sebastian Elizalde, RF – 2-for-5, 2B

Game Notes: Tyler Mahle was certainly not immune to hard contact on Friday night, which is something the right-hander is not accustomed to.

Biloxi came out of the gate hitting Mahle hard, with a home run, single, and double in the first leading to two runs.

However, he faced just two over the minimum through the second and third. In the fourth, he allowed a single and another RBI double. He pitched around triples in the fifth and sixth, before allowing another run in the seventh on a solo home run.

Early, with Pensacola, Mahle was able to pitch around hard contact, but not as much lately. He has allowed five home runs in his last three starts.

Taylor Sparks homered again and now has three in his last six games.

Result: Tampa 7, Daytona 1

Starting Pitcher: Keury Mella, RHP – 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K

Top Hitter: Yorman Rodriguez, DH – 1-for-2, 2B, R

Other Notable Performers:

Chad Tromp, C – 1-for-3, 2B, RBI

Game Notes: Keury Mella has been a mixed bag in 2016.

In fact, Friday was a mixed bag for the right hander as well. Through four innings, he had allowed three singles and a walk, but was just two over the minimum.

However, in the fifth, the wheels started to come off. He allowed three singles, a walk, and a player reached on a throwing error, leading to three runs and the eventual loss.

Including Friday night, Mella has allowed at least seven hits in his last five starts.

The only thing that the Daytona offense was able to string together was two doubles in the third inning. Tampa scored nine unanswered runs after that.

Result: Dayton 5, West Michigan 1

Starting Pitcher: Alex Webb, RHP – 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

Top Hitter: Nick Senzel, 3B – 3-for-4, HR, 3 R, 2 RBI, 2 SB

Other Notable Performers:

Daniel Sweet, LF – 2-for-4, 2B, R, BB

Brantley Bell, DH – 3-for-4, RBI

Game Notes: Nick Senzel showed he can do it all once again on Friday night.

In addition to his three hits, Senzel also smashed a home run on a line shot to left center field. It was his fourth home run in just over a month with Dayton.

Senzel also stole two bases in the game and now has 12 on the season and has only been caught four times.

Alex Webb was strong in his second professional start about the Rookie Leagues.

Webb allowed two runners on in the first and two singles in the third, but was tremendous outside of that. He tossed perfect frames in the second, fourth, and fifth.

Result: Billings 4, Ogden 3

Starting Pitcher: Ian Kahaloa, RHP – 3.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

Top Hitter: T.J. Friedl, CF – 3-for-3, 2 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Alejo Lopez, 3B – 1-for-3, R

Hector Vargas, DH – 1-for-3, R

Game Notes: T.J. Friedl is viewed as the possible steal by the Reds in the 2016 draft class, as he was signed as an undrafted free agent on Friday officially.

That night, Friedl homered in his first two at bats and went 3-for-3 in the contest.

The first homer was on just the second professional pitch that he saw. On the second home run, he worked the count to 1-2 before launching it.

Iah Kahaloa went just 3.2 innings after tossing 72 pitches in that span. He did strike out five though.

Result: AZL Reds 2, AZL Brewers 1

Starting Pitcher: Gregory Reinoso, RHP – 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 2 K

Top Hitter: Jake Turnbull, DH – 2-for-3, RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Leandro Santana, 3B – 1-for-4, 3 K

Andy Sugilio, LF – 2-for-3
