Game recap (8/7/16): Nick Senzel homers in third straight, Jackson Stephens tosses another gem

Result: Columbus 14, Louisville 5

Starting Pitcher: Alfredo Simon, RHP – 1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

Top Hitter: Seth Mejias-Brean, 3B – 2-for-4, 2B, R, RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Ray Chang, 1B – 2-for-4, 2 RBI

Jose Peraza, SS – 1-for-5, 2B, 2 R, 2 K

Game Notes: In a game that featured two Major League rehab assignment pitchers and Rookie Davis making his Triple-A debut, it seemed that Louisville was destined to not give up many runs on Sunday.

However, that was not the case. Alfredo Simon started the game, and allowed three hits and a run in his inning of work.

Then, Davis took over and allowed a single and a walk to his first two hitters. A fielder’s choice got him one out, but moved the lead runner up a base in the second. A single scored a run before he picked up the second out via strikeout. However, a three-run homer opened up the flood gates to rudely welcome Davis to the new level.

A perfect third showed that Davis has the ability to get batters out at the level, but he once again allowed back-to-back one-out doubles in the fourth and then a RBI single for two more to cross the plate.

Davis allowed three more runs in the fifth. He surrendered 10 hits and nine runs for the game in four innings, while tossing 93 pitches.

A.J. Morris followed Davis and allowed three hits and three runs on a pair of homers in 0.2 innings of rehab work.

The only bright side was that Kevin Shackelford once again allowed no runs, and has given up just one in his last 20 innings of relief.

Jose Peraza and Seth Mejias-Brean each doubled in the contest.

Result: Pensacola 4, Biloxi 1

Starting Pitcher: Jackson Stephens, RHP – 7 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

Top Hitter: Sebastian Elizalde, RF – 2-for-4, R

Other Notable Performers:

Alex Blandino, 2B – 1-for-4, 2B, RBI

Zach Vincej, SS – 1-for-4, R

Game Notes: Jackson Stephens dominated an opponent once again. That has been a theme for the most part this season with Pensacola.

He once against allowed just one run on Sunday, and has not yielded more than three runs in a game since June 5.

It was not completely smooth sailing for Stephens on Sunday, however. He allowed at least a hit in each of his first four innings in the contest. He then worked a perfect fifth and sixth, with two strikeouts in the latter frame.

Stephens allowed a one-out single in the seventh, but picked up a strikeout and a fly out to end his night.

Abel De Los Santos worked a perfect inning and still has not allowed an earned run in his 10.2 innings since being picked up by the Reds.

Alejandro Chacin worked a scoreless ninth for his 21st save of the season. Chacin has not allowed a run in his last four innings, and lowered his season ERA to 1.82.

Alex Blandino collected a double in the contest and is hitting .333 in his last 11 games. He has hit in nine of them.
