Game recap (8/9/16): T.J. Friedl keeps hitting, Amir Garrett bounces back

Game Notes: Following one of his worst starts of the season, Amir Garrett rebounded nicely on Tuesday night.

Garrett tossed seven strong innings and was a tough luck loser with no run support after allowing just three hits.

Garrett tossed four no-hit innings and struck out six over that span, including the side in the third. He had a batter reach in the fourth, but picked up a double play to the next hitter.

With one out in the fifth, Garrett allowed back-to-back doubles to push a run across the plate.

After a perfect sixth, Garrett allowed a solo home run to lead off the seventh and his night was over after the frame and 93 pitches and 60 strikes.

Jesse Winker added a double in the contest. He is now hitting .359 in his last 11 games.

Seth Mejias-Brean added another hit on Tuesday and has now hit in three straight games to snap a 4-for-36 slump over his previous nine games.


Result: Pensacola 7, Biloxi 4

Starting Pitcher: Nick Travieso, RHP – 3.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 K

Top Hitter: Phillip Ervin, LF – 2-for-4, 2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI

Game Notes: Nick Travieso made his return from the DL on Tuesday night and made his first start since July 18 with Pensacola.

He worked around some trouble early, as he allowed a walk and a single in the first inning. Travieso also allowed a walk and single in the second, as well, but got out of the jam again.

A one-out walk in the third put another runner on, but Travieso responded by striking out the final two hitters of the inning.

After a single and a ground out in the fourth, Travieso was removed from the game after 58 pitches, reaching his count.

Barrett Astin continued his strong work as well in relief. Astin allowed allowed just two hits in 3.2 shutout innings.

Ajejandro Chacin once again had a strong outing to pick up his 22nd save of the season. He has allowed just two hits and no runs in his last 5.2 innings of work with eight strikeouts.

Alex Blandino added a double in the contest and is 8-for-16 in his last four games, with two three-hit efforts. He is also hitting .362 in his last 11 games. He has hit in 11 of his last 13 games.

Phillip Ervin hammered a sixth inning home run for his 10th of the season. Ervin is hitting .294 with four extra base hits in his last 10 starts.


Result: Daytona

Daytona was postponed due to rain on Tuesday night and will play a double header on Wednesday.


Result: Lake County 2, Dayton 0

Game Notes: Chris Okey snapped out of a 3-for-30 slump over his past nine games with a two hit game on Tuesday night.

Overall, Dayton has struggled offensively and Okey had two of the team’s four hits for the night.

One of them was a single by Daniel Sweet, who continued a seven-game hit streak.

Top Hitter: T.J. Friedl, DH – 2-for-4, 2 R

Taylor Trammell, DH – 3-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI

Hector Vargas, SS – 2-for-3, BB

Game Notes: T.J. Friedl picked up two more hits on Tuesday night and has shown to be a natural in professional baseball so far.

Friedl has gone 11-for-20 with seven extra-base hits in his first five professional games.


Taylor Trammell added three hits and has been strong of late, going 6-for-13 in his last three games. He has raised his average to.293 on the season.

Hector Vargas picked up two more knocks and has hit in eight straight games and 39 of his last 47 games.

Scott Moss worked five more strong innings on Tuesday night of shutout ball. Moss now has two straight five-inning outings with just three hits allowed in each.

Moss had a batter reach on an error in the first, a double in the second, and a walk in the third, but was able to pitch around all of that.

He faced more trouble in the fourth, as a single and a double put runners on second and third with one out. However, he got a fielder’s choice ground out to get the runner at the plate and a pop out to end the threat.

He was perfect in the fifth and ended his night with a strikeout after 70 pitches.
