Game preview (8/12/16): Homer Bailey, Rookie Davis look to rebound

Overview: In a night of starters who had a rough outing last time out, Homer Bailey, Rookie Davis, Keury Mella, and Antonio Santillan look to rebound. Jackson Stephens looks to work into the seventh for his fourth straight start.

Cincinnati at Milwaukee, 8:10 p.m. EST

Starting pitcher: Homer Bailey (1-1, 7.27 ERA, 1.85 WHIP, 10 K, 4 BB)

Notes: In his first start in over a year, Homer Bailey dominated the Padres for most of the afternoon. However, in his second start, he clearly did not have his best stuff in Pittsburgh. He allowed eight hits and five earned runs over three innings of work. While the bullpen did allow some of his inherited runners to score, Bailey was still not sharp.

Louisville at Gwinett, 7:05 p.m. EST

Starting pitcher: Rookie Davis (0-0, 20.25 ERA, 3.00 WHIP, 3 K, 2 BB)

Notes: After a disastrous first outing, Rookie Davis will take the hill for his second start with Louisville on Thursday night. In his first start, Davis lasted just four innings, and allowed nine runs on 10 hits. In 18 starts with Pensacola, Davis posted a 2.72 ERA with a 1.11 WHIP in 96 innings of work. Davis had an extremely good month of July. For the month, Davis posted a 2.49 ERA and he struck out 24 in 25.1 innings of work.

Tennessee at Pensacola, 7:30 p.m. EST

Starting pitcher: Jackson Stephens (7-10, 3.16 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 105 K, 35 BB)

Notes: Jackson Stephens has been the model consistency for Pensacola this season. He has gone at least five innings in 20 of his 21 starts and worked into the seventh in his last three starts. In six of his last eight starts, he has went at least six innings, with the other two being five-inning outings. In his last start, Stephens seven innings and allowed seven hits, but only one run, while striking out six.

Tampa at Daytona, 7:05 p.m. EST

Starting pitcher: TBD

Notes: The starter is listed as TBD on the Daytona website, but it would be Keury Mella’s turn in the rotation. Mella has struggled drastically lately, allowing 38 hits and 18 earned runs in his last five starts, spanning 26 innings.

South Bend at Dayton, 7:00 p.m. EST

Starting pitcher: Antonio Santillan (1-1, 8.68 ERA, 1.82 WHIP, 9 K, 7 BB)

Notes:  In his first start above rookie level last week, Santillan really struggled. In that first start, Santillan walked five and allowed four hits in 3.2 innings of work. However, he was much better in his second start, allowing six hits and two runs over six innings on August 6. He also struck out seven hitters, continuing to build on his success of being extremely strong missing bats with Billings. He will eye regaining that form at the new level to wrap up the season.

Billings at Ogden, 9:00 p.m. EST

Starting pitcher: Moises Nova (0-5, 4.64 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 31 K, 20 BB)

Notes: In his last start, Nova worked into the fifth for the second straight time, and first since his first start of the season. He also broke a string of allowing four hits in back-to-back starts, and has allowed five total in his last two. The main issue is that he has walked nine batters in his past four outings.
