Game recap (8/15/16): Austin Orewiler and Amir Garrett toss gems, Aristides Aquino homers again

Result: Indianapolis 5, Louisville 2

Starting Pitcher: Amir Garrett, LHP – 7 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

Top Hitter: Carlos Triunfel, 2B – 3-for-3, 2B, R

Other Notable Performers:

Jose Peraza, SS – 2-for-5

Jesse Winker, LF – 1-for-3, BB

Game Notes: Amir Garrett certainly deserved a better fate than a no decision on Monday night.

Garrett tossed seven shutout innings for Louisville, and 109 pitches, allowing just six hits. He allowed two of those hits, including a lead off double in the first inning. He also allowed a base runner on a single in the second, before a perfect third and fourth innings.

A single and a walk brought another jam in the fifth, but he was able to work his way out of it with one of his five strikeouts. After a perfect sixth, Garrett had a first and second situation with two outs, but struck out Pirates prospect Josh Bell to end the threat.

However, Kevin Shackelford allowed four hits and five runs in the bottom of the ninth and got just one out. Coming into the game, Shackelford had allowed just 16 hits and two runs total at Triple-A in 22 innings of work.

Jesse Winker added a single and a walk to raise his OBP to .446 for the month of August.

Jose Peraza picked up two hits and is 6-for-15 in his last four games.

Result: Tennessee 9, Pensacola 4

Starting Pitcher: Tyler Mahle, RHP – 3 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

Top Hitter: Sebastian Elizalde – 3-for-4, R, RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Zach Vincej, SS – 1-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI

Chad Wallach, C – 1-for-4, 2B

Game Notes: Tyler Mahle had been able to pitch around damage for most of the last month, but escaped unscathed. However, he was due and on Monday, he was not able to do so.

In the first, Mahle allowed two singles to start the game, but struck out two of the next three batters to get out of it. But in the second, a walk and back-to-back singles plated the first run. A double then brought home two more before Mahle struck out the last two hitters again.

After a perfect third, it looks like Mahle was settled in. However, in the fourth, he allowed a hit by pitch, double and single before being replaced. Two of those three runners later scored.

The bright spot for the staff was that Abel De Los Santos and Alejandro Chacin worked perfect innings, and each struck out two. Chacin has not allowed an earned run in August, while De Los Santos has not in 12.1 innings since joining the Reds organization.

Sebastian Elizalde picked up three hits in the game and is hitting .395 over his last 10 games.

After seeing a 2-for-25 slump, Aquino has gone 5-for-17 with four home runs over his last four games.

Brian O’Grady and Juan Duran each chipped in three hits in the game.

Jonathon Crawford made his third start with Daytona of the season and faced the minimum through the first two innings. He ran into trouble in the third and allowed a bases loaded single with two outs. He faced one over the minimum in his final two innings of work as well.
