Game recap (8/27/16): Amir Garrett is strong, Juan Duran stays hot


Result: Louisville 8, Columbus 3

Game Notes: After a rough start to his outing, Amir Garrett settled in and gave a solid effort.

Garrett allowed a single, double, and walk to the first three hitters at the game to put in a run and leave runners at first and second with no outs. However, a double play and a strikeouts got him out of the jam.

He also allowed two singles in the second inning, but a pair of strikeouts allowed him to pitch around those. A lead off solo home run plated another run in the third, but Garrett pitched around more damage as he also allowed a double but no more runs.

Garrett started to get in his groove in the fourth, as he was perfect and struck out a pair. He was also perfect in the fifth, but allowed a lead off double in the sixth. A fielder’s choice, a single, and a passed ball put runners at second and third with one out. A sacrifice fly scored another run. Garrett finished the inning without any more and was removed from the game.

Seth Mejias-Brean had three hits and broke a 5-for-32 slump over his previous nine games.

Kevin Shackelford tossed a perfect ninth and has been very good except one five run blown save earlier in the month. Outside of that start, Shackelford has allowed just four hits, one run, and two walks in 9.1 August innings.


Result: Pensacola 5, Jacksonville 3

Starting Pitcher: Tyler Mahle, RHP – 6.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 K

Top Hitter: Alex Blandino, 2B – 2-for-4, 2 2B, R

Brandon Dixon, RF – 1-for-3, HR, R, 2 RBI, BB

Chad Wallach, 1B – 1-for-3

Game Notes: Tyler Mahle saw a nice bounce back outing on Saturday night.

Coming into the game, he had an August ERA well over seven, but it was difficult to tell in the latest contest, with Mahle going 6.1 strong innings.

Mahle pitched around a one out double in the first, with a strikeout and a pair of ground outs. For the game, Mahle had a 7:3 GO:FO rate.

He was perfect in the second inning, but got into a bit of trouble in the third. After a ground out and a strikeout, he allowed back-to-back walks before ending the threat on another strikeout.

He was also perfect in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, with three ground outs and two strikeouts between the two. Both of the strikeouts came in the sixth.

Mahle allowed a walk and a two run homer before picking up a strikeouts and being removed from the game in the seventh.

Brandon Dixon added another home run on Saturday night night and now has a eight-game hit streak. Over that span, he is hitting .469 over that span. It was Dixon’s first home run since August 2.

Top Hitter: Gavin LaValley, 3B – 3-for-4, HR, R, 2 RBI

Blake Trahan, SS – 2-for-5

Game Notes: Blake Trahan stayed hot on Saturday night, as he picked up two more hits in the contest. In his last four games he had a double on Friday night, a home run on Thursday night after a double and a triple in his two hits on Wednesday night.

Trahan has hit in 12 of his last 13 games and has seven multi-hits games in that span. He is hitting .407 in those 13 games.


Juan Duran added four more hits and the game and has now hit in eight of his last 10 games. Over that span, Duran is hitting .450.

Jonathon Crawford struggled again with command and has allowed 10 hits, seven earned runs, and six walks over his past two starts, spanning six innings.


Result: Bowling Green 9, Dayton 3

Starting Pitcher: Antonio Santillan, RHP – 3 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 5 BB, 1 K

Top Hitter: Daniel Sweet, LF – 2-for-4, HR, R, RBI, BB

Luis Gonzalez, SS – 3-for-4

Game Notes: Antonio Santillan struggled once again with Dayton since his promotion about a month ago from Billings.

Santillan lasted just three innings in the contest and walked five more hitters. In 23.1 innings since the promotion, he has walked 23 hitters.

Daniel Sweet added two more hits and a home run. Over his past six games, Sweet is 8-for-25 after breaking a 0-for-16 slump over his previous four.


Result: Billings 9, Helena 5

Starting Pitcher: Andrew Jordan, RHP – 4.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K

Top Hitter: T.J. Friedl, CF – 2-for-5, HR, 2 R, RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Jose Siri, RF – 2-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI

Michael Beltre, RF – 2-for-4, R, BB

Game Notes: T.J. Friedl hammered his third home run in just 19 games with Billings on Saturday night.

Over that span, Friedl is hitting .385 with a 1.040 OPS. Of his 29 hits, 13 of them are for extra bases.

Jose Siri picked up a double and two hits int he contest as well. Siri has hit in three straight games after cooling down a bit after a powerful week two weeks ago.


AZL Reds

The AZL Reds were off on Saturday and return to action on Sunday.
