Game recap (9/4/16): Huge night for Gavin LaValley, Seth Varner goes seven again

Seth Mejias-Brean, 1B – 2-for-4, R

Game Notes: Beau Amaral picked up two hits and a pair of doubles on Sunday, breaking a large slump.

After a fast start in Triple-A, Amaral has hit just .194 in his last 10 games.

Jesse Winker added a double and went 4-for-10 in his last three games after a 1-for-13 slump.

Starting Pitcher: Sal Romano, RHP – 6 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

Top Hitter: Alex Blandino, 2B – 3-for-3, 2 R, 2 BB

Sebastian Elizalde, RF – 2-for-5, 2B, 3 RBI, R

Game Notes: After going eight shutout innings in two of his last three start prior, Sal Romano struggled through six innings on Sunday.

Romano faced the minimum through the first three innings, put allowed a pair of runs on two hits and a walk in the fourth. Romano allowed two more in the sixth on two more hits.

Barrett Astin and Alejandro Chacin each worked perfect inning in relief, continuing their strong stretches each.

Sebastian Elizalde picked up two hits and had his fourth straight multi-hit game on Sunday. He is now hitting .419 in his last 15 games with 10 multi-hit efforts.

Zach Vincej also added two hits Sunday is now 9-for-18 in his recent four-game hit streak.

Brian O’Grady, 1B – 2-for-5, 2B, RBI

Game Notes: Gavin LaValley had a career-type game on Sunday, with four hits, three doubles, and a home run.

LaValley has hit .405 in his last 10 games, and has three home runs in his last eight games.

Shed Long added two hits, while Blake Trahan chipped in three of his own. Long has hit .323 over his last eight games, while Trahan  took from a hot August and hit .381 in his last 10 games.

Seth Varner worked seven innings for the fourth time in his last six starts. For the second time over that span, he allowed just four hits in a seven-inning start. He also allowed two or less runs in each of the six games except one.

Starting Pitcher: Jesus Reyes, RHP – 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

Top Hitter: Luis Gonzalez, SS – 3-for-4, 2B, RBI

Mitch Piatnik, RF – 2-for-5, R

Game Notes: After beginning the season as an after thought, Jesus Reyes ended his season on a strong note. Reyes began the season as a reliever, but made 10 starts and his last eight appearances.

As a starter in 2016, Reyes worked 50.2 innings and posted a 3.02 ERA. He also walked 19 and struck out 34. As a reliever, he posted an ERA under two and was successful in each role.

Luis Gonzalez added three hits on Sunday and has hit in 13 straight games. Over that span, he has hit .347.

Starting Pitcher: Zac Correll, RHP – 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

Top Hitter: Jose Siri, CF – 3-for-5, 2B, 3 R

Other Notable Performers:

Colby Wright, 1B – 3-for-4, HR, R, RBI

Ty Blankmeyer, 2B – 2-for-4, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI

Game Notes: Jose Siri hit .280 in August and has carried over that success into September.

After three more hits on Sunday, Siri is 4-for-10 this month, with a double and a home run.

Colby Wright added a home run and has hit .278 in his last 10 games with three home runs.
