Game recap (9/5/16): Keury Mella and Nick Travieso toss gems

Result: Louisville 4,  Indianapolis 1

Starting Pitcher: Keury Mella, RHP – 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

Top Hitter: Jesse Winker, RF – 3-for-4, R

Other Notable Performers:

Steve Selsky, LF – 2-for-4, 2B, R

Seth Mejias-Brean, 1B – 2-for-3, 3B, R, 2 RBI, BB

Game Notes: In his Triple-A debut, Keury Mella built on what was a down second half for the right handed prospect.

Mella worked seven strong innings, allowing just three hits and a run on Monday to wrap up the Louisville season.

He posted an ERA over five in each of June and July and then a 4.13 ERA in August with High-A Daytona.

After a perfect first, Mella loaded the bases in the second, but was able to pitch around any damage.

He was also perfect in the third and fourth, but allowed his first run in the fifth on a solo home run.

However, Mella responded by striking out two in each of the sixth and seventh innings to wrap up his first start at the level.

Jesse Winker added three hits and ended his Triple-A season 7-for-16 in his final four games.

Result: Pensacola 3, Birmingham 1

Starting Pitcher: Nick Travieso, RHP – 7.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

Top Hitter: Alex Blandino, 2B – 2-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Chad Wallach, C –1-for-4, 2B

Jeff Gelalich, CF – 1-for-3, 2 R, BB

Game Notes: Nick Travieso had easily his strongest outing since coming off the DL nearly a month ago.

Travieso worked 7.2 shutout innings, and was nearly unhitable most of the day. Even the contact that the opposition got was not solid, as his five hits allowed were all singles.

He allowed just a single in the second after a perfect first, and responded by striking out the final two hitters with a runner at first in that second.

Travieso repeated the feat in the fourth, by allowing a hit by pitch and a single with one out before striking out the last two hitters.

The fifth brought a lead off single, but then a ground ball double play to end that threat.

He was perfect in the sixth and seventh, but ran into some trouble with two outs in the eighth after a single and a walk. He was removed from the game and Abel De Los Santos finished the frame.

In five August starts since coming off the DL, Travieso posted a 3.91 ERA, allowing 24 hits and 14 walks in 25.1 innings of work. However, he was much stronger on Monday.

Alex Blandino added a pair of hits and a double. In his last two games, Blandino is 5-for-8. After a slow start to the season, he is looking to build a strong September on top of an August where he hit .287 with six doubles and a homer.

The Daytona Tortugas wrapped up their season on Sunday.

Result: South Bend 3, Dayton 0

Starting Pitcher: Jake Johnson, RHP – 4 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

Other Notable Performers:

Luis Gonzalez, SS – 1-for-4

Daniel Sweet, RF – 1-for-4

Game Notes:  Luis Gonzalez picked up another hit on Monday and has hit in 14 straight games to end his season. Over that span, he has hit .352.

James Vasquez ended his season with two doubles. While he hit just .223 for the season, Vasquez did show some power at Low-A, hitting 14 home runs and 20 doubles.

The Billings Mustangs were postponed due to rain on Monday and return to action on Tuesday night.
