Overview: Dan Straily looks to correct some command issues, while Jackson Stephens starts Pensacola’s second playoff game.
Cincinnati at Pittsburgh, 7:05 p.m. EST
Starting pitcher: Dan Straily (11-7, 3.83 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 131 K, 61 BB)
Notes: After one of his few poor starts of the season on August 29, Straily bounced back nicely in his last outing by working 5.2 strong innings. He allowed just three hits and a run. That was the good news. The issue was that he walked seven hitters and ran his pitch count up, making it impossible to go deeper. Seven walks is by far a season high for Straily, who had been posting a career low in BB/9 coming into this start. He has seen some command issues in that past, so this is an issue that he will need to curb in his start on Thursday night.
Mississippi at Pensacola, 7:30 p.m. EST
Starting pitcher: Jackson Stephens (8-11, 3.33 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 131 K, 41 BB)
Notes: Jackson Stephens will start on Thursday and be on full rest. After a strong season, Stephens struggled to the finish line in the regular season. However, his last start was his best in a few weeks. In that start, Stephens worked six innings, allowing eight hits and one run, while striking out seven. However, Stephens failed to last five innings in two of his three previous starts. On August 28, he allowed three hits, three walks, and four runs in just 0.2 innings.
Billings at Helena, 9:05 p.m. EST
Starting pitcher: Soid Marquez (5-3, 6.30 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, 21 K, 18 BB)
Notes: Soid Marquez will make his first start of the season after 18 relief appearances. Marquez is in his third season with Billings and has made just five starts prior. In 2016, walks have been the aspect that has doomed the right hander, as he has allowed 18 free passes in 30 innings of work.
