Game recap (9/7/16): Pensacola takes game one in playoffs behind Rookie Davis, Taylor Trammell stays hot

Result: Pensacola 6, Birmingham 5

Starting Pitcher: Rookie Davis, RHP – 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K

Top Hitter: Zach Vincej, SS – 3-for-5, 2 2B, R

Other Notable Performers:

Ray Chang, 1B – 3-for-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI, BB

Taylor Sparks, 3B – 2-for-5, RBI

Game Notes: Sure, Rookie Davis did not have a strong August and first start in September, but when it all mattered in the first game of its playoff series, Pensacola gave Davis the ball…and he did not disappoint.

Davis came out of the gate pumped up and struck out the side in the first. He fanned another in a perfect second as well.

He allowed his first hit in the third, a one-out double. However, Davis was able to go to his weapon once again and strike out the next two batters to end the threat.

In the fourth, Davis allowed a single and a RBI double for the lone run that would cross the plate against him in the contest. Additionally, that was the last hit he would allow also.

After striking out two in the fifth, Davis issued a walk in the sixth, but that runner was later erased on a caught stealing.

Davis was replaced in the seventh and a generally steady bullpen rotation of Barrett Astin, Abel De Los Santon, and Alejandro Chacin looked to lock the game down. However, Wednesday was not the best night for Astin, who allowed three hits and two runs in an inning, or Chacin who picked up a blown save in the ninth.

With this, Pensacola found itself trailing in the bottom of the ninth and needing a spark.

Phillip Ervin walked to start the inning, and then Sebastian Elizalde reached on an error. After Brandon Dixon struck out, Zach Vincej singled to load the bases with just one out.

Ray Chang singled to knot the game up at five. After Taylor Sparks struck out for the second out, Joe Hudson coaxed a four-pitch, walk off walk to seal it.

Vincej added three hits in the game, including two doubles. Over his current six-game hit streak, Vincej is hitting .481.

Chang also chipped in a double, and is hitting .458 in his last eight games.

Result: Billings 3, Helena 1

Starting Pitcher: Moises Nova, RHP – 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
