Game recap (4/8/17): Dilson Herrera homers, huge day for Chris Okey

Result: Louisville 7, Columbus 2

Starting Pitcher: Rob Wooten, RHP – 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 10 K

Top Hitter: Dilson Herrera, 2B – 2-for-5, HR, R, 4 RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Jesse Winker, RF – 2-for-3, 2B, R, BB

Sebastian Elizalde, LF – 2-for-4, RBI

Game Notes: Dilson Herrera appears to have recovered from his second straight season dealing with a shoulder ailment. In his season debut on Friday night, Herrera homered and also played the entire game at second base. When he was shut down defensively in the spring, he was still able to hit.

Sebastian Elizalde has picked up back-to-back two hit games to start his season after Friday night.

After an 0-for-4 game in his opener, Jesse Winker added two hits and a double on Friday night.

Rob Wooten picked up right where Sal Romano left off the night before, adding 10 strikeouts in just six innings of work. He also, like Romano, allowed two runs over that span.

Nick Routt worked a pair of scoreless innings to nail down the win.

Result: Tennessee 2, Pensacola 1

Starting Pitcher: Luis Castillo, RHP – 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

Top Hitter: Brian O’Grady, CF – 1-for-3, HR, R, RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Josh VanMeter, 2B – 2-for-4, 2B

Gabriel Guerrero, LF – 2-for-4

Game Notes: Luis Castillo, the prize of the Dan Straily trade, made his Reds organization debut Friday night, and did not disappoint.

Castillo allowed a lead off single and a walk in the first, but got out of the jam with a double play. After that situation, Castillo retired the side in order in the second, third, and fourth. In the third, he fanned two of the three outs.

After getting the first two hitters to fly out, Castillo allowed his only blemish of the night on a solo home run in the fifth. He also allowed a one-out double in the sixth, but struck out two more to end his night successfully.

Offense was the issue for Pensacola, who had only five hits by three different players. The highlight was a solo home run by Brian O’Grady.

Result: Florida 5, Daytona 4

Starting Pitcher: Jose Lopez, RHP – 5.1 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K

Top Hitter: Chris Okey, C – 2-for-4, 2B, 3B, 3 R, BB

Other Notable Performers:

Nick Senzel, 3B – 1-for-5, 2B, 2 K

Reydel Media, LF – 2-for-3, 2B, 2 RBI, BB

Game Notes: Both top picks in last summer’s draft, Chris Okey can at times be in Nick Senzel’s shadow when it comes to prospect status. However, he stole the show on Friday night with a double and a triple.

Not to be outdone, Senzel added his first double of the season.

Reydel Medina chipped in his second two-hit game in as many contests for the 2017 season. He also picked up his second double of the season.

Jose Lopez’s line on the mound looks a lot worse than it actually was. Lopez allowed four unearned runs in the third inning after an Alfredo Rodriguez error prolonged the frame. Lopez struck out seven in his six innings of work.

Tanner Rainey struck out all three hitters that he faced in his inning of work, continuing the success that he saw out of the bullpen last season.

Result: Lake County 7, Dayton 3

Starting Pitcher: Scott Moss, RHP – 4.1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 8 K

Top Hitter: T.J. Friedl, RF – 2-for-3, 3B, RBI

Other Notable Performers:

Hector Vargas, SS – 1-for-3, 2B, R, 2 RBI

Brantley Bell, 2B – 1-for-3, 2B, R, 2 K

Game Notes:T.J. Friedl added two hits and a triple in Dayton’s official second game of the season on Friday night. Thursday night’s rain shortened game was finished prior to the contest as well.

Prior to the rainout, Taylor Trammell hit his first home run of the season in the first, while Tyler Stephenson added his first double of the season in the same frame. Those were the only highlights, even after the game resumed.

On back-to-back nights, prospect starters Tony Santillan and Scott Moss struggled with command and had tough outings.

Hector Vargas, who mastered the hit streaks last season, had one hit in each game, including a double in the second contest.
